Duchamp
Marcel Duchamp encarava a vida com uma certa ligeireza. Com um desdém assumido e militante pelo trabalho, enquanto forma de sustento, era um dandy curioso que percebeu rapidamente o que tinha de fazer para ficar na história. E fê-lo. E depois passou a vida a jogar xadrez, enquanto esperava que o Mundo acordasse para a importância da sua obra. E há mesmo quem diga que a sua melhor obra foi o silêncio, essa auto-reclusão que permitiu às outras pessoas reflectir sobre aquilo que ali estava. Décadas depois de "Nu Descendo as Escadas" e do primeiro "readymade", as pessoas perceberam finalmente o génio e a inteligência do senhor.
E, no meio disto tudo, há um pré e um pós-Duchamp. O André Breton chamou-lhe "o homem mais inteligente do século XX". Os génios como ele não deviam morrer. Aqui fica o momento em que se escreveu um dos mais importantes capítulos da história da arte dos últimos séculos.

"Here in New York I have bought some objects of a similar style and called them 'readymade.' You know enough English to understand the meaning of 'already finished' that I have assigned to these objects - I sign them and put an inscription on them in English. I'll give you a few examples: I bought a big snow shovel upon which I wrote 'In advance of the broken arm...' Don't try too hard to understand this in a romantic or impressionistic or cubistic way - it doesn't have anything to do with that; another 'readymade' is called 'Emergency in favor of twice'... This whole preamble is one for reason: Go get the bottle rack. I am making it into a readymade from afar. On the inside of the bottom ring you will write the inscription I will give you at the end here, using small letters and painting them on with a brush and silver-white paint, and in the same lettering you are to sign it as follows: Marcel Duchamp."
